Traduzir textos jurídicos costuma ser uma tarefa assustadora para estu-dantes de tradução, que normalmente não possuem formação jurídica adequada, tornando-se ainda mais intimidante quando se trata da tradução para a segunda língua. In this article, it is our purpose to highlight how ad hoc monolingual corpora can be useful for those who engage in the translation of specialised, legal texts into their second language, especially as corpora help retrieve phraseologi-cal and discursive information on which to base translation decisions in a more informed manner. Most legal translator training programmes seem to particularly focus on the development of thematic competence, with Law-related elements playing an outsized role and other abilities, such as technological competence, being down-played. However, translator trainees must be equipped with the skills required to successfully translate legal texts into their second language and subsequently meet this real market demand. Translating legal texts is usually perceived as being daunting by Translation students, who normally lack legal training, and it becomes even more intimidating when legal texts must be rendered in the second language. Overall, both methods contribute to the training of functional translators who are aware of their role in translator-mediated legal communication.

The second method is used to study professional translations to develop critical thinking for translation purposes and strengthen the strategic sub-competence. The first application, whereby corpora are used as a decision-making aid and a resource during the translation process, is oriented towards increasing the textual fit of trainees’ translations by raising the awareness of target legal conventions, allowing for more nuanced terminology/phraseology work, reduced interference and a selection of more familiar patternings. The author proposes two complementary applications: Method 1–Use of corpora to translate: hands-on experience during the translation process and Method 2–Study of corpora to reflect on the translation process. The perspective is that of an English- Polish translator trainer in the Master’s translation programme. A continuación, describiremos la experiencia de 10 años del grupo GENTT en el aula de traducción especializada, en la que hemos aplicado una metodología basada corpus y dirigida a promover la formación guiada y el aprendizaje constructivo y cooperativo. En primer lugar, revisaremos la bibliografía sobre experien-cias previas de aplicación de corpus textuales a la enseñanza de la traducción jurídica. These suggest that classroom activities with monolingual, multilingual and translated corpora of legal documents may prove useful to students of legal translation, improving their strategic competence and providing them with text models and patterns to be used as terminological, textual and legal/conceptual references. A review of previous teaching experiences with legal textual corpora is presented, followed by a descriptive overview of GENTT's research group 10 years' experience using corpus in the classroom with a translation training approach that promotes scaffolded education as well as constructive and cooperative situated learning.
This paper analyses the application of corpora to the teaching of legal translation in higher education settings combining the use of both the GENTT TransTools Corpora platform and Sketch Engine.
